| Standing
in a spectacular position overlooking the plateau of Vaucluse, Gordes
is the perfect Provencal village, with tiers of mellow stone houses rising
from the plain. At the summit are a Renaissance château and a church.
The views from its terraced streets of the valley and the distant Luberon
are superb. Steep narrow streets and alleys paved with rough stones thread
their way between many fine houses from the sixteenth and seventeenth
century. The charming village square has a good selection of open-air
cafes. There are two bakeries, a supermarket and a vegetable shop as well
as craft and pottery shops. Every Tuesday there is a delightful street
market with local produce, wine, olives, fabrics, etc.. There is a wide
selection of restaurants in and around Gordes.Gordes has a world wide
reputation as one of the most beautiful villages of France and Peter Mayle's
book 'A Year in Provence', set in the area, has certainly helped
to reinforce this. Many movie stars, artists and politicians have made
their home here. There are open-air cafes, shops and 15 restaurants in
and around the village. |
